Sail250 ships heading up the Bay

Sail250 on the bay

Seaplane pilot Sam Riggs of Coastal Seaplanes took a number of guests above the Chesapeake Bay from Tides Inn on Tuesday, June 23, to witness several international tall ships make their way up the bay for the national Sail250 celebration. Over 60 tall ships and naval vessels representing more than 20 countries are participating. The fleet began the celebratory voyage in May in New Orleans and is making its way through several major ports, including Norfolk, Baltimore, New York City and Boston. This is the Bowdoin, an American ship built in 1921 that notably made 26 voyages to the Arctic between 1921 and 1954. Today the Bowdoin is used for Marine Maritime Academy students to develop skills in seamanship and celestial navigation. Photo by AnnGardner Eubank
