WHITE STONE—Jeanne Hutchinson Rose, lovingly known to her family as Mia, passed away on October 13, 2026.

She leaves behind a family who will remember her for her creativity, her generous heart, her sense of humor and the many thoughtful ways she made life special. Whether she was crafting something by hand, tending her flowers and herbs, planning a family beach trip, or preparing her famous homemade hot chocolate kits, Jeanne had a gift for turning everyday moments into lasting memories.

Born on October 27, 1954, Jeanne grew up in Arlington, while spending weekends, holidays and summers in Irvington with family. She graduated from Yorktown High School and completed one year at James Madison University before returning home to marry a waterman from Goat Island. Jeanne met Lacy Calvin Rose Jr. in the summer of 1970, though it would be nearly two years before their friendship turned into romance.

They began dating in June 1972, shortly after Jeanne graduated high school, and married on September 22, 1973. Together, they shared 53 years of marriage by raising a family, building a life on the Northern Neck, and making countless memories along the way. Jeanne was the “Mia” to Lacy’s “Poppop,” and their love and partnership helped build the family Jeanne treasured so dearly.

Over the years, Jeanne was both a business owner and a dedicated professional. In 1979, she and her husband opened Ro-Hut Oysters in Palmer, and in 1994, she turned her passion for quilting into a business by opening the Briar Patch Quilt Shop. She also worked as an executive assistant in finance, served as a legal secretary and managed motel operations at Windmill Point Marine Resort before joining VCB Financial Group in Kilmarnock, where she remained until retiring in 2019.

A talented quilter, basket weaver and knitter, Jeanne shared her skills as a quilting instructor across Virginia and held leadership positions with the Tavern Quilt Guild in Heathsville and River Quilters in Kilmarnock. Jeanne loved gardening, boating, hunting for seashells and taking the family to the Outer Banks for their annual beach vacation. She was a devoted fan of Hallmark movies and Christmas ornaments, an expert shopper who began her Christmas shopping on January 1, and the keeper of special family traditions. It was rare to see her without a good-quality gel pen or a stash of butterscotch Werther’s candies in her purse. Her homemade jellies and hot chocolate kits were treasured gifts, but perhaps her most special gifts were the personalized, handmade quilts.

Her grandchildren knew her as Mia, a nickname given to her by her first grandchild that stayed with her for 28 years. She loved capturing family moments from behind the camera, and whenever all four grandchildren gathered for a photo, she would prompt them to say, “We love, Mia” instead of “cheese.” It was a simple tradition that captured the warmth and closeness she built with the people she loved most.

Jeanne is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Lacy Calvin Rose Jr.; her daughter, Lisa Carol Rose (Tony Ferguson), of White Stone; her son, Shawn (Lindsay) Rose, of Reedville; her four grandchildren, Lacy “Lane” Brocklebank, Olivia Brocklebank, Cailey Rose and Pierce Rose; her honorary son, Charles Brocklebank; her cousin, Bob Barrack; her sister-in-law Carolyn Rose (Brent) Barrett; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J. Carlyle and Maxie Hutchinson; her sisters, Patricia Hutchinson Bevard and Judith “Judy” Hutchinson Epps; and her sister-in-law, Glenna Rose Harding. She also leaves behind her best friend, Janet Keyser Christopher.

Jeanne’s life will be remembered in the quilts and baskets she made, the traditions she created, the memories she captured, and the many ways she made those around her feel loved. Her family will carry her spirit forward in the little things she taught them to cherish and in the words she made part of their family: “We love, Mia.”

A celebration of Jeanne’s life will be held at 2 p.m. November 1 at the White Stone Volunteer Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the White Stone Volunteer Fire Department at P.O. Box 272, White Stone, VA 22578, in appreciation for hosting her service, or to a charity of your choice.
