Mary Ann H. Dunaway

WEEMS—Mary Ann Haynie Dunaway, also known as Mary, passed away on October 25, 2026, at the age of 88. She passed peacefully at her home in Weems after a short illness, surrounded by love, following a fulfilled life devoted to her family, friends and work.

She was born on May 19, 1938, in Rockville, Maryland, to Elizabeth Doggett and Walter Haynie and was raised by her grandparents, Corrie Taft and Cleveland Doggett, from the age of 6 months. The Doggetts owned and operated a general store and post office in the small village of Nuttsville.

Mary Ann attended Lively High School, and while in high school she met and married James Franklin Dunaway. They raised two daughters, Shelia and Tina. The Doggetts were a large family as well as the Dunaway/Whay families and Mary Ann and Frank were surrounded by love and support.

Mary Ann was no stranger to work, given her background with her grandparents’ general store. She enjoyed keeping busy. She worked a variety of jobs during her lifetime. Some may remember her driving the York Academy school bus every day from Nuttsville to Shackleford for seven years before the school closed. Others may remember her from Rappahannock General Hospital where she worked as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant for 16 years in the Emergency Room, Med Surgery, OBGYN and Intensive Care Unit. Later she worked as a waitress at the Pilot House Restaurant and the Beacon in Topping. When she finally retired, she filled her spare time with volunteering at the Interfaith Council, and lastly at the White Stone Methodist Women’s Thrift Shop.

As busy as she kept herself, she always had time for her family, friends, co-workers and her precious pups. She will be sorely missed but remembered in the hearts of those who knew her.

Mary Ann was predeceased by her husband, Frank; her daughter, Tina; her brother, Walter G. Haynie; her great-granddaughter, Adalee Ashburn; and loving companion, C.P. Hilliard.

She is survived by her daughter, Shelia Dunaway Ashburn Brown (Dan); grandsons, Aaron Ashburn and Devin Brown; and great-grandchildren, Alexis and Cora Ashburn and Dalton Brown.

She leaves behind many loving and treasured family and friends including Catherine Dunaway Clingan, Carolyn Benson Whay and Fannie Stevens Clingan.

A graveside service for Mary Ann and her daughter Tina will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, November 8, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Kilmarnock.

Memorial remembrances may be sent to Kilmarnock Rescue Squad.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
