School board hears reports on lead, books and cheating

CLARAVILLE—The discovery of troubling levels of lead in the water at Northumberland Elementary School last month triggered quick action by school superintendent Dr. Holly Wargo.

On April 9, she informed the school board that a letter went out to parents immediately, notifying them of the problem.

“Of 136 sites, 14 sites had elevated lead levels and were shut down. That included one hand washing sink, 11 restroom and two classroom sinks. All drinking fountains were fine,” said Wargo.

Maintenance and facilities director Cris Kallenberger said a 30-second flush was performed at each of the affected locations in the 22-year old facility.

“It showed the problem was close to the sink. We changed all the faucets March 30,” then retested the sites. “Those test results are expected on April 15,” he said…
