The Lancaster County Health Department on Tuesday confirmed a rabid skunk bit a woman July 23 on Boys Camp Road near Kilmarnock.
Lancaster animal control officer Jamie Abbott caught and killed the skunk the next day during daylight hours and sent it to the state lab for testing, he said.
It tested positive for rabies, according to Dr. Richard Williams, director of the Three Rivers Health District.
The normal behavior for a wild animal is to stay away from people, so if one approaches you regard them as dangerous, he added.
If you are bitten by any wild animal, seek medical attention promptly as it is 100% fatal if the animal is rabid and a proper course of treatment is not followed, said Dr. Williams.
