Processors demanding ‘cleaner’ recyclables

Beth Muzio of Weems arrived at the Kilmarnock refuse collection and recycling site with all of her recycling mixed in one bag and discovered that she had to sort it into separate containers under new rules.

LANCASTER—In recent weeks, Lancaster County recyclers have been surprised by new sorting requirements when dropping off their plastics, glass, paper and metals at one of the county’s three pick-up stations.

Household recycling must now be divided by type, not mixed together, said solid waste and recycling supervisor Donald Brown. The sorting policy comes on the heels of a recent revision of guidelines regarding what’s acceptable.

Only #1 and #2 plastics are part of a new policy imposed by Riteway Recycling, a Lottsburg “hauler” that transports recyclables to processing plants. Riteway also has requested residents do better at removing contaminants like food waste and residue from their paper, metal and plastic.

More restrictive policies in Lancaster County are part of a global shift…
