The pilothouse from the Steamer Potomac was installed at the Steamboat Era Museum, 156 King Carter Drive, Irvington, on Wednesday morning, May 29.

A 155-ton crane lifted the pilothouse over the top of the museum and it was threaded into a large hole in the back wall of the museum.

The museum began a major capital campaign to raise $350,000 for the project and new exhibits. The pilothouse will serve as the museum’s main exhibit.

The pilothouse is the largest remaining piece of a Chesapeake Bay steamboat in existence. It was the custom to burn or disassemble the ships when they were decommissioned and use them as barges.
