As computer technology advances, folks often go out and buy the latest and greatest, while leaving the old to sit unused. But rather than see still useful technology wasted, students from Northumberland High School (NHS) have been using their computer skills to refurbish donated computers that would otherwise be sitting on a shelf collecting dust.
They’re giving them new life as valued resources for people in need of computers.
Under the guidance of computer and technology education teacher Jay Lightfoot, NHS is now one of 77 schools across the Commonwealth participating in the Virginia Student Training and Refurbishment Program (VA STAR). This program allows students to gain computer skills and information technology industry certifications while providing needed technology to individuals and organizations, both locally and internationally.
