Weems residents deliver post office frustrations to supervisors

LANCASTER—Disgruntled Weems residents on January 30 voiced concerns to the Lancaster board of supervisors regarding U.S. Postal Service (USPS) plans to put a post office on James Lane, in the middle of a residential area.

Representing some 15 residents present, William Barnhardt highlighted zoning, safety and health concerns regarding a proposed prefabricated post office building with no running water being placed on a residentially-zoned lot.

Barnhardt said the James Lane road width “varies between 12 and 14 feet,” requiring “oncoming vehicles to pull over to allow passage.” The addition of the post office would increase traffic on the narrow lane, posing safety concerns for children and pets, and property concerns should the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) choose to widen the road to mitigate traffic issues.
