Northumberland board foregoes cigarette tax; approves No Wake Zone ordinance

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland board of supervisors on Thursday, April 8, took up the issue of a cigarette tax, a maximum $.040 per pack that could be imposed at retail outlets throughout the county.

County administrator Luttrell Tadlock said, “We could potentially see around $74,000,” not including administrative costs which would be shared among participating counties in the Northern Neck Region Cigarette Tax Board.

I am not in favor of a cigarette tax,” said District 5 supervisor Ronald Jett. “What’s next, a Coca Cola tax?”

District 1 supervisor James Brann and District 2 supervisor Richard Haynie were also opposed to the new tax. “There’s enough tax on cigarettes now….
