Lancaster board opposes plan to downgrade Milford Haven; receives comments and updates

LANCASTER—The Lancaster board of supervisors on Thursday, July 29, unanimously authorized county administrator Don Gill to draft a letter voicing opposition to the U.S. Coast Guard’s (USCG) plan to downgrade the Milford Haven Coast Guard Station in Mathews from a small boat station to a seasonal station.

There’s some concern as far as responding to emergencies,” Gill said.

He added that the letter would also be sent to the Commandant of the USCG Admiral Karl L. Schultz, as well as Sen. Mark Warner, Sen. Tim Kaine, Rep. Rob Wittman, Sen. Ryan McDougle and Del. Margaret Ransone.

Public comments

During the public comment period, residents shared concerns about solar facilities. This is ahead of the August 26 presentation to the board by Waller Solar developers, Open Road Renewables.

Merry Point resident Sheila Kearns expressed concern about the amount of land devoted to solar projects, especially near rivers and marsh lands. Kearns said that between the Merry Point and Waller Solar projects, “8.3 square miles of Lancaster County or 6% of our total land mass” will be devoted to solar projects.
