Northumberland planning commission reviews land use section of comp plan

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland County Planning Commission continued work on revising the county’s comprehensive plan November 18 by discussing chapter 3, which addresses land use.

Commission member Patrick O’Brien said he had concerns about the chapter overall. “As written, it reflects a sensibility which I don’t think is where we are today,” he said. “One of the things that troubled me is that there seems to be an overriding ‘let’s keep everything that way it is’ mentality. I don’t think that’s where the county is these days. I think the county is more pro-business, pro-employment and pro-development.”

Commission chairman Al Fisher said he agreed in part. He said it is important to “keep the county in its rural character and heritage” while welcoming and “expanding business.”

There were only minor updates to the chapter and no vote was taken.
