Washington & Lee blocks Lancaster’s run to the Class 1 state basketball finals, 59-57

Probably most of the 1200 fans in Lancaster’s packed gymnasium Monday night wouldn’t have put money on the outcome, not even most of the Washington & Lee fans.

The Eagles (15-7) brought their “A” game to Lancaster High School this week to upset the higher ranked Red Devils and bring an end to a storybook season for Lancaster’s young basketball team.

Washington & Lee clawed its way back in the final minutes to take its first lead of the game and edged Lancaster, 59-57, in a Class 1 state semifinal. The win advances the Eagles to the state final against Auburn at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the VCU Siegel Center in Richmond.

No one expected the outcome because the Devils have beaten the Eagles three times this season and….
