Alfred J. Harris

KILMARNOCK—Alfred James Harris of Kilmarnock died May 6, 2022.

He was born March 17, 1962, to the late Lawrence Harris and Inez Veney Harris of Richmond.

He was a member of New St. John’s Baptist Church and a 1981 graduate of Lancaster High School, where he excelled in sports.

He attended Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He returned to Virginia and worked as a security officer for Virginia Commonwealth University. He later was promoted to university police officer. He attained the rank of lieutenant with Virginia Union University police department.

Alfred concluded his law enforcement career by serving as a Capitol Police Officer under Gov. L. Douglas Wilder.

In recent years, he was employed by Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club and later The Compass Entertainment Complex.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Edna V. Jones and Ida D. Harris.

He is survived by his children, Jasmine Harris of Calla, Justin Harris of Newport News and Jade Harris of Heathsville; grandchildren, Marcus and Mekhi Crawley; a loving and devoted friend, Shiela Palmer of Heathsville; siblings, Elicka Harris of Lively, Seletha Walters of Weems, Melvin Harris of Chesterfield, Inez Henderson of Hampton, Phillip Harris of Richmond, Teresa Harris of Clinton, Md., and Harvey Harris of Portsmouth.

A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 13, at New St. John’s Baptist Church, Kilmarnock. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
