Lady Indians open soccer season with a 1-3 stretch

After COVID-19 played havoc with participation, the Northumberland High School girls soccer program is enjoying increased numbers again, according to head coach Mark Fridenstine.

Although NHS won’t field a junior varsity team again this year, the varsity team includes 20 players, five more than last year, he said.

Nine are returners and 11 are new to the sport.

The Lady Indians have gotten off to a 1-3 start.

Northumberland 7, Mathews 0

Northumberland rebounded from a shutout to deliver one, beating Mathews, 7-0, on March 24.

The Lady Indians held a 3-0 lead at the half and pushed in four more goals in the second half with Abby Jennings, Camdin Sisk and Ryland Pearson scoring two goals each. Sadie Blake scored once.

NHS took 29 shots on goal. Sisk led with nine shots and Pearson had seven….
