Swift prohibited from keeping pets for life

HEATHSVILLE—Phyllis D. Swift of Burgess was found guilty of one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty October 16 but could potentially face conviction on another 56 counts, according to Northumberland County assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Erin Hapgood.

Swift’s home was raided by Northumberland County Animal Control Officers in March when 58 dogs of varying breeds and ages were seized and taken to the county’s animal shelter for care and adoption.

General District Court Judge John Martin found Swift guilty of one of the charges and sentenced her to 12 months in jail, all suspended, on the condition that she is not to have companion animals for the remainder of her life. Judge Martin also added….
