KUMC to bid Corys farewell on June 23

The Rev. Penny D. Cory, who came to Kilmarnock United Methodist Church (KUMC) on June 30, 2013, will retire June 30, after serving 11 years here.

“Pastor Penny” was ordained at the Virginia United Methodist Annual Conference in June 1990. She has been a pastor of six United Methodist Churches for a total of 34 years in her ministry, reported Laura Reeves. She has served her church and community well.

She was born and raised in a Christian home and has always loved the Lord, said Reeves. Her call to ministry came while she was serving as a two-year Journeyman Missionary in Taiwan after graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Her husband, the Rev. Birt Cory has been her best support. Following Covid, he was hired by KUMC as its media specialist and has live streamed the Sunday worship services.

Pastor Penny has enjoyed visiting with at-home members and those who are in the hospital, continued Reeves. Both enjoy singing in the KUMC choir and have done various music programs in the community. On fourth Tuesdays the Corys go to Commonwealth Senior Living to celebrate the residents birthdays in that month. They sing favorite hymns; while he shares some of his jazz music from his various horns and trumpets…
