The world is her oyster: meet Jennifer Sagan

Jennifer Sagan grew up in New Jersey. However, her interest in Chesapeake Bay oysters began as a child when she visited her grandparents who had settled near Horn Harbor in Burgess.

During sailing excursions, Jennifer was curious about the signs that read “no shellfish harvesting.” They made an impression on her and piqued her curiosity. So much so, that she obtained her college degree in marine biology in 2021. Today she understands the “what and why” behind the signage. She works for the Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR). Jennifer is the oyster restoration specialist for this important organization. She works with a dedicated team of people who have a common goal.

The FOR is the voice and an active force for a healthy and scenic Rappahannock River and its watershed which includes the Chesapeake Bay. The Rappahannock River starts at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley in the far western part of the state. It traverses across the Virginia Piedmont until it empties into the Chesapeake Bay south of the Potomac…
