Kilmarnock piecing a mountain biking trail at Town Centre Park

KILMARNOCK—Cyclists can prepare to mount up for a new mountain bike trail taking shape at Town Centre Park following the Monday, August 19, town council meeting.

During her streets/sidewalks/playgrounds committee report, Rebecca Nunn moved to authorize staff to request the Virginia Department of Transportation to abandon a portion of Fox Hill Drive on town property that will become part of the new mountain biking trail at the park.

Mae Umphlett seconded the motion and it passed by a unanimous 6-0 vote with the support of Curtis Smith, Mike Bedell, Alice Cooper, Les Spivey, Umphlett and Nunn.

The town had previously been gifted a deed to the land, roughly half an acre.

Another change coming near the park will be the removal of a large oak tree on the adjacent Middle Bay Realty property.

According to zoning administrator Marshall Sebra, in continuation of the town’s sidewalk project, an added paved shoulder on Town Centre Drive will interrupt the tree’s root….
