Lloyd D. Hagen

WEEMS—Lloyd D. Hagen, 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Weems, on September 28, 2024. He was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on January 2, 1930, to Elmer Hagen, a Lutheran pastor, and his wife Alma, both of Norwegian descent.

Lloyd grew up in northern, rural Minnesota where his father served country and small-town churches. He attended Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls and after graduation from high school joined the U.S. Navy Medical Corps—serving first in Illinois and then in Portsmouth. After four years of service, he was accepted to the College of William and Mary. He graduated in 1956 with a degree in government and politics.

His interest in government and foreign policy eventually led to a career with the Department of State. Foreign Service assignments included posts in Turkey, Australia and Germany with frequent travel between assignments to the Middle East and North Africa.

Upon retirement he settled in Charlottesville where his wife Tina worked for The Miller Center of Public Affairs at UVA. After 22 years, they relocated to the Northern Neck. Here, Lloyd and Tina began to experience, for the first time, the joy of belonging to a community they truly loved.

Lloyd was a voracious reader and creative writer. He is being remembered for his breadth of knowledge, intellect, deep faith, warmth and kindness- and his love of a good Martini!

Surviving him are his wife of 42 years; his sons, Duane of Arkansas and Dean of Arizona; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck, Partners for Pets, or the Grace Episcopal Church Trust.

There will be a celebration of Lloyd’s life at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 16, at Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
