OPHELIA—Betty King Appleby, 83, of Ophelia passed away on November 20, 2024.
She was born on August 7, 1941, to the late Earl Richard King Sr. and Jennieve Vanlandingham King. Betty was the widow of Phillip Garner Appleby and a member of Afton Methodist Church.
Betty is survived by her son, Phillip W. Appleby Sr.; grandsons, Phillip W. Appleby Jr. (Tollie) and Aaron Appleby; and great-grandchildren, Jackson, Brooks and Leah Appleby.
Along with her husband and parents, Betty was also preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Leggett; and her siblings, Helen Gordon, Marshall Clark, Dickie King and James King; and her great-grandson, Trevor Appleby.
Betty spent her years working with the school systems in the Northern Neck, first as the office secretary at Fairfields Elementary School in Burgess and then as the office secretary at Rappahannock Community College in Warsaw. She was very active in her church, serving as the financial secretary, and involved in fundraising and church events.
Betty loved to travel with her friends Judy Jett and Linda Gallihugh, taking many bus trips and trips on their own to see plays, musicals and even to Dollywood. They were known affectionately by some as “The Golden Girls” and always had a wonderful time.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. To honor Betty, the family would like to suggest donations to Afton Methodist Church.
Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
