HEATHSVILLE—Northumberland residents voiced concerns about both the school and county budgets during public hearings held by the board of supervisors on Thursday, June 5. The board must wait seven days before taking any action on either budget.
The school division submitted an unbalanced budget—$23.5 million in revenues and $22.6 million in expenses—that was advertised for the public hearing. Prior to the hearing, superintendent Dr. Karen Leslie addressed the problem. “We did discover an error. When this data was submitted—the same way they were submitted last year—they were submitted for Fund 1 and did not include Fund 3 federal expenses.” In a follow up conversation, Leslie said they are working toward submitting a balanced budget as they continue to look at reductions.
Residents felt there were cuts to be made in the budget request, which is up just over $2 million ….
