Part 10: The USS Indianapolis is Lost but the Bomb is Delivered

This week, 80 years ago in July 1945, Japan and the Allies were in fierce combat. Most of the islands south of mainland Japan were now under the control of Allied troops. The continuous bombardment had devastated the islands and left Imperial Japan’s navy and merchant marine almost inoperable; however Japan continued the battle.

July 28, 1945, was a disastrous day for Japan. The battleships Haruna and Ise were sunk by the U.S. Task Force 38. Other ships were bombed as well, ever-weakening the Imperial defenses. With the islands under constant attack, starvation was beginning to afflict the inhabitants.

Japan was suffering, yet the U.S. casualties would continue to escalate as well. The feared “kamikaze” pilots sacrificed themselves relentlessly, hurling their planes….
