Jerry M. Wachter

GAYLORD, MI—Jerry M. Wachter, 76, most recently of Gaylord, Michigan, passed away on December 26, 2025, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He had been a cancer survivor since 1977 when he defeated Hodgkins lymphoma.

Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Jerry attended Ottawa Hills High School and later graduated from Grand Valley State University with a degree in anthropology. His curiosity about people and cultures led him to serve as a Peace Corps volunteer in Korea and to pursue extended anthropological studies at the University of the Americas in Cholula, Mexico.

In 1973, Jerry married the love of his life, Kathy, whom he met at a Rickie Nelson concert. They have shared 52 wonderful years, living in two countries and three different states. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, adventure and companionship.

Jerry always lived life to the fullest. He found joy in sailing, hiking, traveling, playing guitar and perhaps most of all—dancing. He loved classic rock and roll, with YES, The Who, Gordon Lightfoot and CSN as some of his favorites. He also knew how to get down with James Brown and MJ. With his natural gift for comedy and entertainment, Jerry had a way of lighting up any room he entered. His warmth, wit and spirited energy will be a lasting remembrance for all.

Throughout his professional career, Jerry worked for several companies including Foremost Insurance Company, Guardsman Chemical and Northern Neck Insurance Company. His dedication, humor and easygoing nature left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends alike. No one had an office like Jerry—always inviting and always rocking.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Kathy; daughter, Elsa, and her husband, Brent; brothers, Dick, Randy and Jeff; and cousins, Thalia, Tyana, Timmy, Tad and Teresa; along with countless friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.

A celebration of Jerry’s life, his Ultimate Retirement Party, will be held at a later date in Grand Rapids. There will be lots of wine and dancing. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Munson Hospice – Grayling, as they were invaluable these past two months, or any non-profit organization.

Please leave your personal messages and memories with the family on his guestbook at www.gaylordfuneralhome.com.∂
