67 teams compete in second Bay Bash fishing tournament

he second annual Bay Bash Family Fishing Tournament August 12 saw 67 teams compete.

The event was a huge success and lived up to its reputation as the most diverse fishing competition on the East Coast, said organizer Capt. Billy Pipkin. The tournament was followed by a concert, benefiting the White Stone Volunteer Fire Department at Ingram Bay Marina.

Hundreds of anglers, young and old, men and women, youth and those with special needs, all competed in boats, kayaks, canoes, piers and shorelines for 34 prizes in 14 different categories.

Over 200 fish were entered into the competition, which appears to be the most species ever recorded and tabulated in any single day tournament, said Pipkin.

Shawn Valentine won first place with an aggregate length of 69.12 inches. Frank Vanecek placed second place with 59.5 inches.

“The competition in this second year was outstanding,” said Pipkin. “All of the winners from last year were dethroned by newcomers who have been practicing up all year for this event.”

More complete coverage is forthcoming.
