Area relatives remember Marian Anderson; opera due Sunday in Essex

by Bessida Cauthorne White

Brenda Anderson-Diggs, 55, of Dunnsville said it was while visiting her grandfather when she was 7 years old that she saw her cousin, Marian Anderson, on the cover of a book and realized that she was famous.

It was not until Brenda was an adult though that she truly came to understand Anderson’s stature as an opera singer. Known to Brenda and her family as “Aunt Marian,” the famed contralto was actually a cousin.

Marian will be introduced to a new generation of music fans when Virginia Opera’s production of “Deep River: The Marian Anderson Journey,” is presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 16, at Essex High School, 833 High School Drive, Tappahannock.
