Audubon seeks volunteers for annual Christmas Bird Count

Counting birds on the Great Wicomico.

For the past six years, the Northern Neck Chapter of the National Audubon Society has sponsored a Christmas Bird Count (CBC) in Northumberland and Lancaster counties. The Christmas Bird Count occurs December 14 to January 5.

This count follows the National Audubon Society’s CBC which began 122 years ago, reported chapter president Kevin Howe. This Audubon Count is the longest continuous citizen science project in North America. The first count in 1900 had 26 people counting birds in 25 localities in North America and this has continued every year with over 70,000 people in more than 2,600 locations participating last year.

The event involves counting as many birds, different species and total numbers, as possible in a 15-mile diameter….
