NEWPORT NEWS—Austin L. Hughes Jr., 60, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at his home in Newport News.
Austin, known to all as Art, was born on February 16, 1959, to Austin LeRoy Hughes Sr. and Joyce Conklin Hughes. He spent his young years growing up in the Northern Neck enjoying the outdoor activities that would become lifelong hobbies.
He was a machine designer for the Clinch River Company where he helped design mining equipment until he moved back to the Newport News area 10 years ago. Art loved to spend his free time watching the waves and dropping a fishing line in the water. As he got older, he really enjoyed talking and getting to know new friends and old.
Art was predeceased by his father.
He is survived by his daughters, Lucile Hughes and Madeline Stephens (Samuel); mother, Joyce Hughes; brother, Ronald Hughes (Charlotte); sister, Jill Hand (Curtis); granddaughter, Samie Stephens; nieces, Laura Hand (Steve) and Kaitlyn Treadwell; and, nephew Bryan Hughes (Whitney).
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
