TAPPAHANNOCK—An Essex High School football game against King & Queen was halted in the third quarter Friday, September 24, after an off-field altercation spiraled into gunfire.
According to a statement from Essex County Sheriff W.A. Holmes, a fight in front of the school’s ticket booth moved into the parking lot. Two deputies were assaulted during the altercation and later treated for minor injuries at Tappahannock VCU Hospital.
Approximately 10 minutes later, shots were fired in the parking lot, which triggered Essex school personnel to activate a panic alarm. Players, coaches and attendees took cover….
