Back to school will begin Wednesday for Northumberland

HEATHSVILLE—The halls of Northumberland County public schools will soon go from quiet and empty to bustling and filled with laughter and catching up as students arrive for the first day of the 2026-27 school year on Wednesday, August 12.

Prior to the first official school day, however, students entering Pre-K, Kindergarten, sixth grade and ninth grade will participate in “New Beginnings” transitions from 8 a.m.-noon on Tuesday, August 11.

This will serve as an orientation for students entering key transition grades and will allow students to become accustomed to new buildings and halls before the rest of the students arrive, said superintendent Karen Leslie.

According to Leslie, there are several major policy and procedure changes for the school year. In accordance with state guidelines, the division approved an updated cell phone restriction policy. Cell phones will not be permitted during….
