IRVINGTON—Barbara Pope Flannagan, 74, of Irvington passed away peacefully on January 9, 2023.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Leftwich Flannagan; her parents, Joseph William Pope Jr. and Alice Simmons Pope of Boykins; and brother-in-law, Arthur H. Friedman of Richmond.

She is survived by her sister, Teresa Friedman Beale (Frank) of Richmond; nephews, David M. Friedman (Lauren) of Richmond and Matthew J. Friedman (Shannon) of Farmville; and her great nieces and great nephew.

Barbara was born and raised in Southampton County. She graduated from Southampton High School and North Carolina Wesleyan College after which she worked for several years as a social worker in Chesterfield County. She later returned to school and in 1987 earned her law degree from the T.C. Williams School of Law of the University of Richmond where she was a member of Law Review. She practiced law in Richmond, before retiring to the Northern Neck after the passing of her husband.

Barbara was a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock serving on its vestry and as director of Christian education. One of the highlights of her life was a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land with other members of Grace. Barbara was so moved by the experience that she applied and was accepted to serve as a warden at St. George’s College in Jerusalem and held that position for more than a year.

Barbara’s family wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury for their compassionate and devoted care of her over the past few years.

Her service will be held at noon Saturday, January 21, at Grace Episcopal Church, 303 South Main Street, Kilmarnock.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Barbara’s name to the Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 1059, Kilmarnock, VA 22482; Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury Foundation, 132 Lancaster Drive, Irvington, VA 22480; or a charity of one’s choice.
