VIRGINIA BEACH—Basil Dennis “B. D.” Spalding III, 80, of Virginia Beach died at home on March 18, 2021.

He was born in Norfolk to Elizabeth Brandon Markley Spalding and Basil Dennis Spalding Jr., who predeceased him. He spent his youth in Richmond and at Locksley Hall in Northumberland County. Mr. Spalding attended North Carolina State University and graduated from Old Dominion University. After college, he lived the remainder of his life in Virginia Beach.

Mr. Spalding was vice president of Woodcrafters of Virginia Inc., a member of The Princess Anne Country Club, The Broad Bay Sailing Association, and volunteered with the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad. A lifelong Porsche enthusiast, he was extremely knowledgeable regarding vintage Porsches. His hobbies included restoring Porsches, sailing and playing golf.

Mr. Spalding is survived by his brother, Carter Brandon Spalding, and his wife, Julia Leonard Spalding; his nephew, Carter Brandon Spalding Jr., and his wife, Shelley Low Spalding; his niece, Julia Blair Spalding Hunter, and her husband, William James Hunter III; his great-nephews, Carter Brandon Spalding III and William Greer Hunter III; and his great-niece, Elizabeth Embrick Spalding, all of Richmond. He will be missed by his friends and by his family and his goddaughter, Martha Lindsay McCaw, of Virginia Beach.

A private burial service will be held in Richmond. The family gratefully suggests that memorials be made to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad or a charity of the donor’s choice.
