The community is invited to the 48th annual Blessing of the Fleet at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at the Omega Protein’s old Morris-Fisher factory tall stack, 610 Menhaden Road, Reedville.
Some seating is available, but it is suggested to bring lawn chairs, reported Valli Mittner of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
The Blessing of the Fleet is a centuries-old tradition started in European fishing villages to bless the men at sea. Many fishing villages in the U.S. still bless their fleets each year, said Mittner. Area ministers will bless the fleet signaling the beginning of the fishing season on the lower Chesapeake Bay.
