Blessing the Fleet

Blessing launches menhaden season

Following a boat parade Sunday on Cockrell Creek to Omega Protein’s Old Morris-Fisher factory tall stack, the 48th annual Blessing of the Fleet offered prayers for the commercial fishermen and fleet. Above, boaters aboard a Smith Point Sea Rescue vessel bow in prayer. The blessings included a prayer for an abundant harvest by the Rev. David Smith, blessing of those who work and those lost at sea by the Rev. Catherine Swann, blessing of the nets and of the buoys by the Rev. Willard Felton and blessing of the ships, planes and pilots by the Rev. Derek Tomek. Omega Protein vice president of operations Montgomery C. Deihl served as keynote speaker.
