Mathews High School harriers ran away with both the girls and boys Region 1A team championships and the Blue Devils produced the individual medalist of the girls race Thursday, November 2, at Newport News Park.
The Lancaster High School boys team, which finished third to earn a spot in the upcoming Class 1 meet, had the boys individual champion in junior Matthew Kane. Kane paced 50 racers with a time of 16:04. Junior Josh Woolard, who won the Northern Neck District meet two weeks ago, placed fourth in 16:44 to help lead Lancaster to a score of 82.
Northampton (North) beat out Lancaster (LHS) by a point, to finish with 81 points as the team runner-up. West Point (WP) finished fourth with 87, Middlesex (MHS) fifth, 93, and Northumberland (NHS) sixth, 177. Rappahannock (RHS), Westmoreland and Essex did not have complete five-member teams.
Kane finished six seconds ahead of runner-up Gavin Dustin, 16:10, of Mathews.
Mathews had all five of its scorers finish in the top 10 for a team….
