Callao park will become a reality

HEATHSVILLE—Parks are often key to making a community a welcoming destination.

Callao’s revitalization and bid to become the “Hometown of the Northern Neck” took a major leap forward with the announcement at the Thursday, June 9, Northumberland board of supervisors meeting that a land donation made by the Burgess family had been finalized, making the dream of a place for families to gather a reality.

Lisa Deitz, president of the Callao Hometown Community Association (CHCA), told the board the original vision for Callao included a park, but “numerous factors” prevented that from happening with the original grant. “That dream of land for a park was realized due to a generous gift from Bobby Burgess and his family.”

Deitz said ownership of the 2.3-acre parcel behind Primis Bank and the Virginia ABC store off of Northumberland Highway had been transferred to CHCA….
