Candidates for town elections slow to commit; filing deadline is June 21

LANCASTER—The filing deadline for November 8 town elections is June 21.

However, only three candidates have filed, according to Lancaster County general registrar and director of elections Susan P. Jett.

In White Stone, elections will be held for mayor and three council seats.

Mayor Randy Reeves indicated he will not seek reelection because he will will be living outside of town limits. Councilman Will Hubbard has filed for mayor.

Ran Reeves, Irving Brittingham and James “Jimmy” Smith have all indicated they will file by the June 21 deadline. Brittingham and Smith have filed.

Meanwhile, Jamilah Sawyer, who had previously filed and withdrew for mayor, resigned her council seat at the May meeting. She stated in her resignation letter, she plans to move near her family in New York. Council appointed Charles Brocklebank to fill that seat until the November election.

In Irvington, three council seats are due election and a special election will be held to fill a fourth.

Councilwomen Jackie Brown and Bonnie Schaschek are both undecided, while Wayne Nunnally is positive he will seek reelection. “The town needs me,” he said. 

Gabe Del Rio, who was recently appointed to fill a vacated council seat, said he is leaning towards running for the seat.

In Kilmarnock, elections will be held for mayor and three council seats. A special election will be held for a fourth. Mayor Mae P. Umphlett is still deciding whether or not to have her name on the ballot. Councilman Curtis Smith also is undecided. Council members Rebecca Nunn, who recently was appointed to fill a vacated seat, and Les Spivey both indicated they intend to seek election. Emerson Gravatt will wrap up his service on council and will not seek reelection. 

The deadline to file and be included on the November ballot is June 21. Town residents interested in seeking election to their perspective councils are urged to contact the voter registration office for filing guidelines.
