NORTHERN NECK—Catherine Cecilia “Cathy” Gregory, 80, of the Northern Neck, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 14, 2024.
Born in Washington, D.C., Cathy was a spirited and loving presence in the lives of all who knew her. She grew up in a bustling household, part of a large family with 41 first cousins, 21 of whom are still alive today. Her father was the eldest of 13 children, planting the seeds of her deeply cherished family ties. Her beloved mother was from a smaller family on Solomons Island, Maryland.
In 1987, Cathy transferred with the US Postal Service to Kilmarnock as a rural mail carrier. Her love for the Northern Neck community blossomed through the friendships she nurtured along her routes, her active participation in her church, and her dedicated service as a foster parent. Cathy was a committed church member at Corrottoman Baptist Church, serving on multiple committees and contributing significantly to community projects.
Known to her family as Cely, her home was a hub of joy and storytelling, often filled with laughter from family and friends. She maintained a lifelong friendship with her grade school best friend, Patricia Elliot, embodying her belief that while family was crucial, friends were her cornerstone. Her spirit of generosity was a beacon for her family, teaching her children and grandchildren the importance of giving back; she embodied this virtue by adopting families each Christmas, anonymously leaving gifts at their doors.
Cathy loved to laugh and was happiest when sharing silly stories, often accompanied by the music of her favorite artiste, Elvis Presley. Fulfilling her final wish, her family and friends celebrated her life with a joyous gathering at Corrottoman Baptist Church, where stories were shared, and Elvis’s tunes played, honoring her vibrant spirit.
She leaves behind her loving siblings, Rose Imogene McHenry (Robert) and Thomas Gregory (Joyce); and predeceased by her dear, younger brother Joseph (Mary); her children, Catherine Joyce, William Joyce (Linda) and Russell Joyce (Katherine); and her adored grandchildren, Samantha Joyce, Elise Joyce, Sara Steinberg, Josh Steinberg, Ethan Steinberg, David Hicks and Debra Hicks. She is survived by 10 great-grandchildren and predeceased by beloved Jon-Jon. Additionally, she was a beloved aunt to Pat McHenry, Teresa McHenry and Michael McHenry, Thomas Gregory and Lisa Gregory and her most beloved grand nephew, Thomas Greogry. Cely maintained a close relationship with her first cousins and their families in the DC metro area and cherished her 21 surviving first cousins, with whom she shared countless joyful gatherings throughout her life.
Fulfilling one of her final wishes, her body was donated to science through the VA Anatomical Society, an act of generosity that typified her life.
Cathy’s memory will live on not only through her family but also in the countless lives she touched with her laughter, warmth and open heart.
