Celebrating and preserving Brookvale High School history

On the outside, the building on Devils Bottom Road in Lancaster looks like many other schools built in the late 1950s and early 1960s, but for Pixie E. Curry, the rooms inside then Brookvale High School hold significant memories.

Pixie E. Curry stands where a future historical highway marker commemorating Brookvale High School will be erected. The marker recently was approved by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Curry attended Brookvale as a fifth grader in 1968, when the school expanded to grades 5-12. Though she would later graduate from Northumberland High School, she looks back at her time as a Brookvale Warrior fondly. “They inspired excellence and provided support,” she said of the Black educators and administrators….
