Cross country runners hit the trail

Middlesex had all five of its scorers finish in the top 10 for a team low 25 points to win a boys cross country race on a rainy afternoon Tuesday, October 2, in Kilmarnock.

Host Lancaster, which produced the medalist and runner-up, scored 48 points for second place and Rappahannock scored 65 for third. Westmoreland and King & Queen did not have complete teams.

Lancaster medalist Matthew Kane ran the race in 17:48 to lead a field of 38 runners. His teammate, Josh Woolard, was the runner-up with a time of 18:03.

Cameron Lambert led the Chargers, finishing third in 18:39. Teammates Thomas Dobb was fourth, 19:54, Gunnar Marston fifth, 19:59, Kevin Turner sixth, 20:43, and Chris Butler seventh, 20:48.

Also scoring for Lancaster were Tylan Lee, 21:38, Gage Smith, 22:16, and Kaysean Davis, 30:43.

Keegan Orem led Rappahannock, placing 10th in 21:01.

In the girls race, it was a photo finish for first-place with Iyana Jenkins of Middlesex edging out Natalie Mothershead of Rappahannock by a second to win the 3.1-mile race. Jenkins led 17 runners. She ran the race in 24:17 with Mothershead second at 24:18.

The Raiders had all five of its scorers finish in the top 10 among team runners to score a low 23 points to win the team race.

Middlesex was second with 40 while Lancaster, Westmoreland and King & Queen did not field complete five-runner teams.

However, Red Devils harrier Rory Lally finished third overall in 24:22, four seconds behind the leaders. She was the only runner for LHS.

Coach Joanne Webb-Fary has only five runners on the girls team including returners, senior Grace Lawrence, junior Marley Bean, sophomores Cynthia Lawrence and Lally and freshman newcomer Finley Major.

Seniors Kane and Woolard are back to lead the boys team along with senior returners Kaysean Davis, Tylan Lee and Ashton Molineaux. Sophomores Isaac Hernandez and Gage Smith also return and are joined by freshmen newcomers Logan Brent, Shelton Ricker, Clement Williams and Estevao Dos Santos.

The Lancaster boys and girls teams will run on their home course at Hills Quarter subdivision on October 16.
