Fifty years ago, Edward J. Davis Sr. walked out of the Ford agency where he spent 23 years of his career and established a business in competition with his old bosses directly across the street.
Davis Auto Sales & Service, which was originally called Davis Dodge, opened its doors at 382 North Main Street, Kilmarnock, on May 1, 1970.
The business is now owned and operated by Edward Sr.’s son, Ed Jr., who began towing cars and trucks for his father at age 16. Ed Jr. took over in 2004 after working as a forest warden in Lancaster County for 20 years. With the help of his daughters, Stacey Beynon and Heather Oliver, Ed. Jr. has expanded the company his father founded.
“My grandfather, he did some towing and a few rental cars. We’ve expanded those businesses probably three times what he started,” said Beynon.
