WEEMS—Dorothy Ann Lewis Abbott of Weems passed away to her heavenly home on Saturday, March 12, 2022.
She was born on January 2, 1932, in Callao to Hilda L. Lewis and Grayson W. Lewis. She lived on a small farm in Owl Town that the family still owns to this day. Dorothy was the oldest of five children. Her father passed away when she was 11 years old, leaving her wonderful mother to raise them alone. With her love and faith for God, she taught them to love God and to love each other.
She lived behind Bethany Baptist Church and joined at an early age. She never moved her membership, but in later years she attended Claybrook Baptist Church in Weems. She attended school in Callao and graduated in 1950. She moved to Richmond and worked for the Bank of Virginia and retired after 35 years of service.
She married Arthur Randolph Abbott in 1952 and they were married for 69 years until his passing. They were never blessed with children, but had many dachshund pups through the years. They traveled many places over the years, and enjoyed boating, fishing and golfing trips. In 2006, they returned to the Northern Neck and spent their final years in Weems.
Dot loved to raise a small garden, and did so just last summer. She loved her roses, and was happy on her knees with dirt on her hands pulling weeds. She was a very neat person and kept a strict schedule every day. Even though she was very outspoken, she was also very generous and loved her family dearly.
Dot was predeceased by her parents; her loving husband, Arthur Abbott; stepfather, Dandridge W. Davis; brother, Grayson W. Lewis (Teeny boy); sisters, Edna L. Bush and Marjorie L. Hanks; and nephews, Danny Hanks and John Tyler Lewis.
She is survived by her sister, Olive Jeane Lewis Thrift; nieces, Wanda H. McGeorge, Linda H. Ashton and Daphne T. Winebarger; nephews, David Bush, Darryl Bush, Dean Bush, Dexter Bush and Gary Lewis; her companion “Willie” the dachshund; and many dear friends and neighbors who helped her through the years.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 17, at Claybrook Baptist Church, Weems.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lancaster County Animal Shelter 3156 Regina Road, Lancaster, VA 22503.
Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
