IRVINGTON—Edythe Davis Simmons died peacefully on June 14, 2021, at the age of 102.
She was born in Atlee to Rev. Charles C. Davis and Edythe B. Davis on March 6, 1919.
After graduating from North Carolina Baptist Hospital Nursing School in Winston-Salem, she and her husband, Maurice, moved to Virginia Beach. There, she served as a school nurse at Kellam High School and Linkhorn Park Elementary.
She enjoyed many wonderful years at the beach, but once her husband of 35 years passed, she chose to move to Irvington where she would live at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury for the next 20 years until her passing. She made wonderful friends there and stayed very active in her community.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Joseph W. Davis, Charles C. Davis Jr., F. Boxley Davis, Anne Murphy Morris and Juliette Golden; and her husband, Richard Maurice Simmons.
She is survived by her daughter, Anne Simmons Cockrell; her grandchildren, Claire Cockrell Cole (Ted) and H. Clark Cockrell III; and her “Great Grands” as she referred to them, Ned, Abby and Greta Cole.
Edythe (Gigi) was a force to be reckoned with and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. A private service will be held in Virginia Beach at a later date.
