
Hurricane Debby threatened to disrupt the 16th annual Dream Fields Spanish Mackerel Fishing Tournament, but a late week shift in the storm made for a picture perfect day and ideal fishing conditions on Saturday, August 10.
There were a record number of boats this year with 97 registered.
“We were thrilled with the turnout,” said tournament director Amy Forrester. “Anglers reported rough seas early in the day but the wind subsided and finished out calm by the afternoon.”
The tournament included over 50 donated raffle prizes from 26 businesses.
Boats weighed in their four largest fish for a combined total. At the top of the leader board again was Wayne Englehart of New Kent aboard PaPa’s Dream with a total weight of 11.07 pounds. Englehart reeled in the biggest fish of the day winning the Calcutta with a citation 3.86 pound fish. He also won in 2023.
Pete and Ryan Conway aboard Ghost Bite took second place with a total weight of 10.25 pounds.
Capt. Micah Kellar with Team Traveler weighed in a total 9.22 pounds for third place. Chris Cadman aboard All Sewed Up weighed in a total 8.98 pounds for fourth and Gene Dawson aboard Smuggler was fifth with 8.95 pounds.
