Essex High School, undefeated at 10-0 during the regular season, was crowned the Northern Neck District tournament champion on Thursday, February 15, following a 49-41 win over Rappahannock. The Lady Trojans also led the All-Northern Neck District girls basketball lineup. The team was announced following last Thursday’s championship game.
Essex High’s Jaylah Mercer and Westmoreland’s Janaya Moore shared co-player of the year honors for the district and the Trojans’ Jonathan Mercer was named the coach of the year.
Ja. Mercer also led Essex High’s first-team selections, which included Morgan Self and Keimare Gray. Amani Brown of Essex was named to the second team.
Westmoreland filled two spots on the first team including Laylah Clarke and Moore, and Rappahannock took one spot in Solai Coleman. Amarreona Ball of Lancaster and Jocelyn McGinniss of Colonial Beach also filled spots on the first team.
