Frieda M. Hornung

Frieda M. Hornung

WEEMS—Frieda Margarete Hornung passed away peacefully in her sleep at her daughter’s home in Weems on September 29, 2018, at the age of 88.

Born to Adolf and Elizabeth Knorr on October 11, 1929 in Nurnberg, Germany, Frieda traveled with her family between Germany and Czechoslovakia during World War II until coming to the USA in 1950. They settled in Boonton, N.J.

In 1955, Frieda met the love of her life, Fred Hornung. They married in 1956 and moved to South Branch, N.J., in 1958. Fred was a design engineer at Ethicon and Frieda worked as an inspector for RCA.

They were married for 43 years before Fred’s passing in 1999, at age 85. They enjoyed many years of sailing and traveling.

From 1960 until 1971, Frieda was a stay-at-home mom to daughter, Lois, and during that time, she enjoyed sewing, gardening, cooking and entertaining friends and family. In 1972, she began working at Foothill Acres Nursing Home where she eventually became the cook until her retirement at age 65.

In 2007, Frieda moved to Virginia with her daughter. She enjoyed visiting the Senior Center at Tartan Village, exercising at the YMCA and volunteering at BSRGH until the age of 85.

Frieda was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a wonderful friend to many. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her daughter, Lois Pinel (Greg).

A memorial visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 18, at the Currie Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Frieda to The Alzheimer’s Association or the American Cancer Society.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Virginia for their dedicated care during the last 10 months and Ms. Dearie Braun, her loving caretaker.
