The Celtic tradition celebrates the winter solstice on December 21 with festivals and yule logs. The lighting of the Yule log symbolizes the transition from longer nights to the lengthening of the daylight. January 14, sometimes called the Old New Year, marks the new year on the old Gregorian calendar. In Scotland, this is celebrated on January 12.
