WICOMICO CHURCH—Gregory Ronald “Ron” Herring Sr., 73, took his last breath on Monday, October 18, 2021, due to complications from COVID-19. His final moments were spent surrounded by his family.

Born September 7, 1948, in Alexandria, Ron moved to Reedville as a child. He attended Northumberland County Public Schools and graduated from Hargrave Military Academy in 1968. He apprenticed and graduated from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1972. Ron met the love of his life, Linda Lee, in 1968 on a blind date. Naturally, he was dancing with Linda’s mother when she first saw him. Ron and Linda were married on March 14, 1970. Ron’s pride and joy were his four children, Rhonda, Angela, Gregory “Greg” Jr. and Sara.

Ron and Linda started The Home Crafters in 1987 and have erected more than 300 homes and completed countless renovations. Known to many as “Big Bop” and “Fish,” he was active at Morattico Baptist Church, the Northumberland County Republican Committee, Northern Neck Home Builders Association, and the Northumberland County school system.

He loved the Northern Neck, its people, and its waters. Ron spent countless days boating and was an advocate for commercial and sport fisherman alike. He never met a stranger, just a friend he hadn’t met, and made many while enjoying one of his greatest hobbies—Karaoke!

Ron is survived by his wife and sweetheart, Linda; sister, Georgena Herring Strawderman of Fredericksburg; daughter, Angela (Shawn) Clarke of Kilmarnock; son, Greg (Shannon) Herring of Wicomico Church; daughter, Sara Bishop of Weems; grandchildren Madison, Bobby and Jacob Clarke, Luke and McKenna Dooley, and Danielle Thompson.

Ron loved his family more than anything and would want to include his nieces and nephews who he loved as his own children, son-in-law, cousins and friends he chose as family.

Those predeceasing Ron are many. His family rejoices in knowing that he has been reunited with his daughter, Rhonda Herring Barth; father, George Ralph Herring; mother, Evelyn Peck Herring Offutt; sister, Carmelita Herring Seymour Stansbury; and cousin, George Seymour.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Those who wish to remember Ron in a special way may donate through a GoFundMe link, gofundme.com/f/Remembering-Ron-Herring. All funds will be directed to the scholarship fund established in his late daughter’s memory to benefit the educational pursuits of his grandchildren.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
