Hazel V. Ford

LIVELY—Hazel V. Ford passed away peacefully on March 10, 2018, surrounded by beloved family members.

Hazel was born in Bluefield, W.Va., to the late Mattie and Charles Ball.

She was preceded in death by her beloved and devoted husband, Joseph William Ford; her young son, David Wayne Smarr; and grandchild, Harold John Biggs.

Hazel grew up in Bluefield with her four brothers and three sisters before moving to Cameron Valley in Alexandria at the age of 14. After marriage, she moved to Braddock Road in Alexandria, where she raised her five children.

She was an active member of Braddock Baptist Church, PTA, Girl Scout Leader and community activities. She was employed at Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company as a long distance operator.

After her husband retired, they moved to Lively, where she became employed at Chesapeake Bank.

Hazel enjoyed volunteering and participating in community activities. She was treasurer of the Lively Homemaker Club for years. She was also president of the Corrottoman Senior Club and coordinator of the senior trips.

Hazel is survived by four children, Harold G. Smarr Jr. of Springfield, Sharon Smarr Nethercutt of Kilmarnock, Brenda J. Biggs, devoted and dedicated caregiver, of Lancaster, and Janet Lee Minnigh (George) of Gatlinburg, Tenn. She is survived by nine grandchildren, Bambi Bryant (Steve), Ronald Nethercutt (Jill), Brice Minnigh, Frederick Biggs, Edward Scott Nethercutt (Mindy), George Minnigh (Beth), Amy Melisa Smarr, Harold G. Smarr III (Stephanie) and Christina Gibbs (Jason); 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Corrottoman Baptist Church. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018, at National Memorial Park in Falls Church.

Family received friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. A reception followed the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent in memory of Hazel V. Ford to Corrottoman Baptist Church, 48 Ottoman Ferry Road Lancaster, VA 22503.
