Helen Francis McDermott Baker

Helen Francis McDermott Baker

MILA—On Sunday, October 2, Helen F. Baker passed away unexpectedly at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond.

She was born April 25, 1938, in Baltimore, to John Gregory McDermott and Luetta Catherine (Fee) McDermott. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by sister, Joan McDermott; brother, John McDermott; her husband of 56 years, Samuel James Baker Jr.; and son, Gregory J. Baker.

Helen is best known for her wonderful sense of humor, unpredictable shenanigans and generous spirit. She was an avid reader who loved the library and often stayed awake into the wee hours of the morning to finish a story.

She was a friend to all animals and truly adored her faithful cat, Howard.

She had nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, with one on the way! She loved to play games and tell stories of magical fairies and leprechauns. She believed her grandchildren were the best and brightest, and loved them all “big bunches.”

Helen was an excellent cook who enjoyed good food and anything sweet. Her motto was, “Dessert First!”

She is survived by her daughter, Eraina Benson, and her husband, Jeff, of Florida; and sons, Samuel James Baker III, and his wife Karen, of Virginia; and Robert C. Baker, and his wife Stacey, of Tennessee.

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 12, at Mila United Methodist Church, followed by a reception in the church Fellowship Hall.

Those who wish to remember Helen in a special way may make a donation to Friends of the Northumberland County Animal Shelter, to sponsor adoptions, FNCAS, P.O. Box 603, Burgess, VA 22432.
